Announcer: Good evening!. And welcome to Film Forum. Tonight we’re going to be talking about the popularity of foreign-language films in British cinemas. With me tonight I’ve got Philip Black, who’s studied the number of people visiting cinemas in Britain over the last year. So, Philip, what have you found out?
Man:
Well, Katy, the number of people who’ve visited cinemas in the UK has actually gone down recently. I don’t think that anyone is going to find that particularly surprising, because, of course, so many people are now watching films on the internet instead of in the cinema. But there is a fascinating trend in British cinemas at the moment. The number of people going to watch foreign-language films has slowly gone up. Now, films in Indian languages- the famous Bollywood films- have always been very popular in British cinemas because of the large South Asian community that we have here. In recent years, all the top foreign-language films in the UK have come from India, sometimes earning over a million pounds in ticket sales. But the biggest news in British cinema at the moment is Polish-language films.
Announcer:
Oh, wow! Is that because of the UK’s large Polish population?
Man:
That’s right. In recent years, around a million Polish people have moved to the UK, and Polish films have slowly become big business in our cinemas here.
Announcer:
What type of films are we talking about here?
Man:
Well, a lot of Polish films in the UK tend to be exciting thrillers, but there are some popular romantic comedies too. For example, the series Letters to Santa is now on its third film.
Announcer:
That’s really interesting, Philip. So- next time I see that there’s a Polish film at my local cinema, I’ll go and check it out.
